Gehlen Catholic Students Excel on ITBS/ITED in Fall 2008

Six out of Gehlen Catholic’s ten classes (between grades 3-12) earned class composite scores in the 91%-ile or higher using National School Norms in fall 2008. For example, the 6th grade class did better than 93% of all the schools in the nation.  Only 7% of all the 6th grade classes in the nation did better than they did taking this test.

Here are Gehlen Catholic’s percentile rankings of student achievement (Composite Scores – National School Norms) by class for the fall of 2008:

Elementary Principal, Mrs. Lorie Nussbaum, responded, “As we begin to analyze the data, we continue to develop plans to address those classes and students whose performance on the ITBS/ITED could be enhanced.  To ensure the strength of our curriculum, administration and faculty evaluate each class’ scores over the years, seeking opportunities for growth in our offerings and teaching strategies to enhance student performance.

Mrs. Nussbaum noted that one of the key reasons for this year’s elementary students’ extraordinary success is because the students are really into reading, a habit that truly enhances their success in all areas on the ITBS.  Mrs Nussbaum noted, “They have taken off with the AR program, are strongly motivated individuals, and are supported through the Letter People (K curriculum),VoWac (1-3 curriculum), Saxon Math, the Success Center, strong parental support for their education, and a dedicated teaching staff who work to continually improve their teaching skills for the benefit of students.”

7-12 Principal, Mr. Jeff Alesch, also recognized the role Mrs. Mary Nilles and Mrs. Kathy Sitzmann play through the K-12 Success Centers.  Mr. Alesch stated, “Every student is talented and gifted in one or more areas.  Some encounter challenges in other areas. With the support of Mrs. Nilles & Mrs. Sitzmann, students, parents, and faculty are successfully implementing strategies to overcome learning differences.”

President, Rev. Kevin Richter, was equally pleased with the results.  Fr. Richter said, “The results of these tests are an important component in the ongoing evaluation of our efforts as a school system.  A solid academic foundation, along with a solid spiritual foundation, form the core components of our particular Catholic school’s identity.  While these test results help us to focus our continuous efforts toward improvement, they also let us celebrate our success story in living the mission of Gehlen Catholic School.”
