Gehlen Jays Football: Overall 5-4 District 4-4
Going
into this season we knew many underclassmen would be starting for
us. Our seniors and coaches felt a winning record was in reach.
The season opened with a close loss to defending champ Woodbury. A
resounding win at West Harrison was followed by a dismal loss to
eventual district champ Lawton. This was followed by a miracle win
at River Valley on a last second TD and extra point. An
excruciating 13-14 loss at homecoming was hard to accept (remember
the phantom timeout?). After being beaten by Galva 28-6, we were
2-4 with 3 games remaining and a tough K-P team up next. Our kids
played with a great deal of emotion and beat K-P 31-18. We finished
our season with two convincing wins over MMC and Westwood.
Taylor
Smith was our lone captain this year and produced a school record
1571 yards passing. Eric Rohe rejoined the squad and had 1200+
yards of total offense, while leading the team in tackles with 111.
Brandon Schmitz, Austin Langel, Alex Pick, Kevin Shea made great
contributions. Eric Hoffmann and Robert Swalve were also seniors
and 2007 was their first year with our team. Eric provided our
kickoffs all year. Junior Chris Gabriel reeled in 40 catches for
633 yards.
Our
2008 team should have lofty goals with 13 letter winners returning
with 7-8 starters returning on both sides of the ball. Returners
will be led by Seniors Alex Westergard, Chris Gabriel, and Joe Sanem;
Juniors, Cole Heissel, Cody Campbell, Drew Kellen, Adam Nemmers, and
Jordan Sitzmann; Sophs Chris Eral, Taylor Wurth, Eric Berkenpas,
Austin Juhl, Alex Wankum
