On Sunday, November 9th, the front lawns of Gehlen Catholic were transformed to a shanty town.  Students, their families, and staff camped out on the lawn in cardboard boxes hoping to gain inside into the life of the poor.  A prayer service, reflection, and fasting was held at 8:30 pm.  “Campers” were asked to bring a canned good to help fill the emptied shelves of the Christian Needs Center in LeMars.

The crisp morning of Monday, November 10th, brought a cold reality to those trading a nice warm bed for a cardboard box.  Students attended school directly from their boxes.  NO change of clothes.  NO breakfast.  NO doubt to bring awareness.

The entire Gehlen Catholic family on Monday, November 10th, joined hundreds of thousands of people around the world for lunch, dining on an entrée shared by many poverty stricken areas – rice porridge.

Director of Campus Ministries, Lisa (Langel, ’80) Sitzmann shared, “As part of our commitment to Pro-Life, we must not only care for the unborn but life afterwards by reaching out to those who are less fortunate.  We often think that the struggles of poverty and homelessness happen to those in ‘The Big City.’  Yet, the fact that shelves of the Christian Needs Center in LeMars are being emptied too quickly drives home the fact that families in LeMars are struggling too.  During this bountiful time of year, we are called to make others aware of the challenges facing our brothers and sisters in Christ and make their lives better.”
