Catholic Schools Week - A Celebration of "Dividends For Life"

January 31st through February 6th, Gehlen Catholic joined the National Catholic Education Association & schools throughout the Diocese of Sioux City to celebrate Catholic Schools Week.  This year’s theme, “Dividends for Life,” celebrated the life-long impact of a Catholic education.

The week began with Bishop R. Walker Nickless presiding at Mass on Monday, February 1st, at 8:45am in the Gehlen Catholic gym.  Mass was concelebrated by 15 former & current priests who served at Gehlen Catholic.

Four generations of the LeRoy (’47) & Vi (Langel, ’50) Kellen family presented gifts to Bishop Nickless during the Mass.

Afterwards, the public attended a reception for Bishop & priests in the Kolker Library & Media Center.

On Wednesday, Diocesan Superintendent, Mr. Dan Ryan, shared his thoughts & vision for Catholic education during the Chamber Coffee and the Peter Gehlen Society Luncheon.

By request, Thursday’s Family Picnic was expanded to include “empty nesters.”

5 & 6th grade teacher, Mrs. Kathy Neary; K-8 Physical Education teacher, Mr. Steve Shea; and Librarian, Mrs. Pat Beitelspacher, were honored during the week for their 25+ years of service.

Gehlen Catholic President, Reverend Kevin Richter, a graduate of Spalding Catholic School, stated, “I have always held, and continue to hold, the conviction that Catholic Schools are a tremendous gift and opportunity in passing on our Catholic faith and traditions to our children.  Catholic schools provide a values-based education that emphasizes intellectual, spiritual, moral, physical and social values in our students.  Catholic schools have a far-reaching impact on shaping the world, whether it is through our student’s support of our parishes, community, local and international missions to our alumni’s chosen ministries years after their graduation.”

2010 marked the 37th celebration of Catholic Schools Week, a joint project of the National Catholic Education Association and the United States Catholic Conference on Bishops.

Gehlen Catholic School is proud to be one of 28 schools in the Diocese of Sioux City and 7,378 Catholic Schools in the United States dedicated to educating and preparing students for a Christian life.
